Ignacio Larrañaga founded the marque in Havana in 1834, at 58 San Miguel Street. It is the oldest handmade Habanos brand still in production.
In the 1920s Por Larrañaga was the first in Cuba to bring in rolling machinery, and it quickly became one of the island's six largest brands.
The tobacco comes from Vuelta Abajo, and the marque's character is smooth and even — that is what it is valued for. Sales slipped towards the end of the twentieth century, but in 2002 the brand returned to fully handmade production.
