The roots go back to 1826, when Svend Bønnelycke opened a tobacco factory in Svendborg. The company itself is dated from 1887: that year Harald Halberg bought his tobacco spinning mill and rebuilt it as a modern factory under the name Harald Halberg Tobaks- og Cigarfabrik.
The business stayed in the family for three generations — after Harald came his son Einar, then his grandson Jørgen. In 1995 the firm was renamed the Mac Baren Tobacco Company: the brand had become better known than the company.
Production has remained in Svendborg, where pipe tobacco, rolling tobacco and smokeless products are all made. In June 2024 Scandinavian Tobacco Group bought the company.
