Don Francisco E. Fonseca was born in Manzanillo, Cuba, in 1868, and in 1892 opened a factory in Havana and started the brand under his own name. He registered it formally in 1907.
Fonseca devised his own packaging: each cigar went into a tube of foil and then an outer wrap of fine Japanese paper, to shield it from changes in the weather. Dressing cigars in silky tissue is still done on every Habanos that carries his name.
He moved to New York with his wife Teresa and by 1903 was running a factory at 169 Front Street, travelling regularly to Cuba to oversee his own works. After he died of a heart attack in Havana in 1929, Teresa carried the business on, merging the brand with T. Castañeda and G. Montero into the firm Castañeda, Montero, Fonseca SA. The cigars are made today at the Lázaro Peña factory in Havana.
