The house was founded in Paris in 1872, and it did not begin with lighters. Simon Tissot-Dupont, born in Savoy, ran a carriage workshop; it burned down, and that same year he bought a workshop making leather briefcases for diplomats and businessmen.
He was twenty-five, had been Napoleon III's photographer, and his made-to-order travel trunks quickly became a must-have among Europe's elite. The great stores of the late nineteenth century, the Grands Magasins du Louvre among them, took him on as a supplier.
The house came to lighters during the war: the Tissot-Dupont brothers made the first luxury petrol lighter and patented it on 6 January 1941. The Maharaja of Patiala was among the first customers.
