The brand belongs to Flamagas of Barcelona, founded in 1959. The company started with metal lighters under the name FLAMINAIRE.
Clipper appeared in 1971 and was the world's first plastic lighter. Enric Sardà designed its shape, and that shape is what made the brand recognisable.
Main production stayed in Barcelona, with some made in Chennai and Shanghai. Together that comes to around 450 million lighters a year — the second largest output in the world after BIC.
